What is  ABIOS®?

ABIOS®is the RGI-designed and patented device which prevents the damages caused to the art of works by bacteria, fungi, and bug proliferation: it sucks in the ambient air, sterilizes it, and returns it in a free- microorganism atmosphere.

Preventing bacteria proliferation in works of art

The ABIOS®(Aerosol Biological Sterilizer) project was born out of the need to prevent and preserve collections stored in museums, libraries, and archives from biological threats without resorting to chemical agents, a danger to the health of humans as well as works of art.

The research was conducted between 2005 and 2007 within the framework of Cordis European Project involved the University of Rome – Phytopathology Department-, the NILU Institut (Norway), Mycoteam (Norway), AMOS (Belgium) and The National Museum in Cracow (Poland).

In the following years, further innovations have been added to perfect the effectiveness of the devices against viruses and bacteria in the atmosphere.

Sterilization and transformation of ozone into oxygen

Abios® technology is based on the application of short-wave UV radiations to eliminate airborne microorganisms in the form of bio-aerosol.

The fluid-dynamic geometry and Abios® special design forbid UV radiations to irradiate the surrounding environment.

When UV radiations hit the air, a part of oxygen is transformed into ozone, a very harmful gas for humans when it exceeds 0,10 ppm. The Abios® catalytic filter eliminates the ozone leftovers thanks to the transformation into oxygen.

ABIOS® Lab test results

Tests carried out at the Microbiology Lab of Rome’s La Sapienza University showed a decrease in the air microbial activity to 99,98% in 12 hours, in a 40 m3 experimental chamber.

The data collected show that the benefits of airborne sterilization involve the entire range of harmful bacteria and microbes: an extraordinary result that guarantees the well-being and health of museums, libraries and archives operators, and visitors.

The images refer to samples collected inside an artificially contaminated 40 mc experimental chamber: the first was collected before installing Abios®, the second after 6 hours after its activation, the third after 12 hours.

The ideal conditions for top effectiveness

  1. The installation environment (number of windows, doors, hourly access, number of people present at the same time)
  2. The volume of the environment in relation to the number of Abios® installed units: Abios®also adapts to huge spaces and its modular nature allows it to employ several units in crowded or vast locations.
  3. the degree of room infestation: Abios®eliminates  99,9% of microorganisms in 24 hours; the more viral/bacterial units are introduced in the environment, the more effectiveness will be triggered.

By installing several units in the same environment, it will be possible to maintain the same level of effectiveness.

Features of ABIOS®
